Fossil eggshells from some of the largest dinosaurs ever discovered have been unearthed in a surprisingly cool region far from the equator. These massive titanosaurs, incapable of keeping their volleyball-sized eggs warm by sitting on them due to their size, resorted to alternative methods, as revealed by a recent study.
Researchers, led by University of Tsukuba paleontologist Kohei Tanaka, in collaboration with scientists from Japan and Argentina, examined the microscopic pores on the titanosaurs’ eggshells. They found evidence suggesting that these dinosaurs employed a similar incubation technique to modern crocodiles – burying their eggs in warm piles of decaying vegetation to maintain optimal warmth for hatching.
Titanosaurs, colossal herbivorous dinosaurs weighing up to 75 tonnes and resembling long-necked giants, roamed the earth during the Late Cretaceous period. The discovery of volleyball-sized fossil eggs linked to titanosaurs, named Fusioolithus, challenges previous assumptions about their nesting habits. These titanosaur eggs were discovered in the Chorrillo Formation in southern Argentina, a region with a climate akin to present-day New York City but located as far from the equator as Red Deer, Alberta.
The study sheds light on the diverse ecosystems where titanosaurs thrived, coexisting with various dinosaur species, crocodiles, snakes, birds, and other fauna. The findings underscore the adaptability of dinosaurs, showcasing their ability to thrive in challenging environments and evolve unique nesting strategies for successful reproduction.
The research emphasizes the resilience and resourcefulness of titanosaurs, highlighting their capacity to adapt to different environments and spread across the globe during the Late Cretaceous period. Further studies on titanosaur nesting behaviors may provide additional insights into their evolutionary success and global distribution.
