Frank Beard, the drummer of the famous Texas boogie-rock band ZZ Top, known for his role in hits like “Sharp Dressed Man,” “Legs,” and “Gimme All Your Lovin’,” has passed away at the age of 77. Beard, who was in hospice care, died at his ranch in Richmond, Texas, surrounded by his family. ZZ Top’s guitarist, Billy Gibbons, expressed his sorrow at the loss of Beard, describing him as a talented and innovative drummer who was an integral part of the band’s success.
ZZ Top, renowned for selling over 50 million records and producing multiple chart-topping singles, including seven albums in the Billboard 200’s Top 10, received three Grammy Award nominations. The band’s iconic drummer, Beard, reflected on his musical journey in the 2019 documentary “ZZ Top: That Little Ol’ Band from Texas,” emphasizing his passion for playing music and his unwavering dedication to the band.
Formed in 1969, ZZ Top was created by Beard, Billy Gibbons, and Dusty Hill, drawing inspiration from blues and rock influences. Their unique style and signature look, characterized by long beards and dark sunglasses, became synonymous with the band’s identity. The trio’s sound, described as a blend of rock, blues, and funk, earned them a dedicated fan base and critical acclaim.
ZZ Top’s enduring legacy is marked by their hit songs featured in various Hollywood movies, showcasing their wit and distinctive musical style. The band’s commercial breakthrough came with the release of “La Grange” in 1973, followed by a string of successful albums and singles. Their album “Eliminator” in 1983 introduced a more polished sound, incorporating synthesizers and drum machines, while maintaining their raw energy and Texan roots.
The band’s iconic bearded look was a result of a serendipitous decision during a hiatus, which became a trademark symbol of ZZ Top’s image. Embracing their rock-chic persona, ZZ Top captivated audiences with their music videos and live performances, solidifying their status as rock legends. Over the years, the band continued to evolve their sound, with producer Rick Rubin contributing to their resurgence with the album “La Futura” in 2012.
Tragically, Frank Beard’s passing follows the death of Dusty Hill in 2021, marking the end of an era for ZZ Top. Despite his health challenges in recent years, Beard remained committed to his music until the end. He leaves behind his wife, Debbie Meredith, and three children, as ZZ Top and fans worldwide mourn the loss of a music icon.
