“Newfoundland and Labrador Seeks Feedback on E-Scooter Safety”

The Newfoundland and Labrador government is soliciting feedback from the public regarding new road safety regulations as the use of e-scooters and e-bikes gains traction.

Government Services Minister Mike Goosney emphasized the need for legislation to keep pace with technological advancements to prevent potential incidents in the future. Concerns raised by parents in Labrador west about the safety of these motorized vehicles have also prompted the push for regulations.

Jackie Granter and Kesha Morgan expressed worries about the lack of safety measures among riders and the absence of proper guidance on road etiquette for e-scooter users. They advocate for implementing safety courses and regulatory measures to ensure responsible operation of these modes of transportation.

To gather public opinions, an online survey is available on engagenl.ca, addressing various safety aspects such as age requirements, helmet usage, education, and speed limits. Additionally, the province is accepting written submissions via email or mail.

Recent data from the Canadian Pediatric Society highlighted the risks associated with e-scooter use, with a significant number of injuries and fatalities reported among children and teens. Experts stress the need for stringent regulations and caution against treating these vehicles as toys.

Various stakeholders, including manufacturers, legislators, and enforcement authorities, are urged to collaborate in enhancing the safety of e-scooters and e-bikes. Julia Kent from the Canadian Automobile Association Atlantic emphasized the urgency in establishing regulations to mitigate the escalating risks posed by these vehicles.

While acknowledging the convenience of micro-mobility vehicles, Kent underscored the importance of balancing speed with safety considerations. She emphasized that despite the challenges, introducing effective regulations is essential to protect public safety.

In light of the regulatory gaps, efforts are underway to address issues such as helmet mandates, speed restrictions, and designated usage areas for e-scooters and e-bikes. The ultimate goal is to ensure a safe and responsible environment for all road users.
