Belgium and Greece Battle Wildfires Amid Europe’s Hot Summer
Belgium is facing one of its largest wildfires, with the blaze continuing to rage despite more favorable weather conditions and rain aiding firefighting efforts. The fire, located in the eastern High Fens region near the German border, has burned through approximately 30 square kilometers of land, leaving charred trees and smoldering ground in its wake. The fire has the potential to persist for months due to the peaty soil, which can harbor underground fires that intermittently flare up.
Europe is currently enduring an exceptionally hot and dry summer, attributed to climate change according to recent studies. In response to the worsening wildfire situation, King Philippe of Belgium cut short his summer vacation to visit the emergency services battling the blaze.
Despite the fire not significantly expanding, challenges remain as certain areas are inaccessible to ground crews. Over 500 firefighters, along with assistance from aircraft from various countries including Norway, Sweden, Germany, and the Netherlands, are working tirelessly to contain the fire. Farmers are also aiding in firefighting efforts by supplying water, and precautionary evacuation orders are in effect for hundreds of residents.
In Greece, a fire near Athens’ main airport was swiftly contained after briefly flaring up, while on the island of Salamina, a wildfire resulted in two fatalities and several homes destroyed. Elsewhere, new wildfires erupted, with firefighters promptly responding to contain the flames. Additionally, an 80-year-old man was arrested in Kavala on arson charges for allegedly starting a fire intentionally.
In France, a wildfire in the Landes region has been brought under control after days of firefighting efforts, allowing evacuated residents to return home. The French government has pledged financial aid to support the affected regions in rebuilding homes and businesses impacted by the wildfires.
As Europe battles these devastating wildfires, officials continue to emphasize the urgent need for preventive measures to mitigate the escalating wildfire risks across the continent.
