A recent report by consumer advocate Which? reveals that some of the major broadband providers in the UK are failing to meet customer expectations for reliable service. The study indicates that smaller alternative networks, often referred to as “alt-nets,” are surpassing larger brands by offering faster speeds, more reliable connections, and better value.
The research highlights that issues with internet connections, such as frequent dropouts, are common among broadband users. Complaints also include slow download speeds and service outages, with a significant 91% of customers experiencing problems with their web service in the past year.
Among the leading providers, Sky faced criticism for frequent dropouts, affecting 38% of its customers. Virgin Media also performed poorly, with 30% of users reporting regular connection issues despite paying premium prices for broadband services.
Additionally, dissatisfaction with slower speeds was prominent among Sky users, with nearly one in three expressing discontent. Other providers like TalkTalk and Sky’s NOW service also received low ratings from customers.
In contrast, smaller UK providers like Zen Internet, Community Fibre, and Hyperoptic received praise for their reliability and service quality. Plusnet stood out among larger providers, surpassing competitors like Vodafone, EE, BT, and Sky.
These findings align with previous research by Which?, indicating that smaller broadband firms consistently outperform major providers in terms of reliability, customer service, and value for money. The report urges households to explore alternative providers in their area and consider switching if dissatisfied with their current service.
Natalie Hitchins, Head of Home Products and Services at Which?, emphasized the importance of quality broadband as an essential service and encouraged consumers to leverage competitive deals and switch providers for a better experience.
Virgin Media responded to the report, highlighting their ongoing investments in improving services and citing positive rankings in various broadband categories. The company emphasized its commitment to delivering top-notch broadband services to customers.
