The parents of a nine-month-old who tragically died while in nursery care are calling for urgent reforms within the industry, emphasizing that the value of a child’s life is immeasurable. John and Katie Meehan, who lost their daughter Genevieve, affectionately known as “Gigi,” in May 2022, are set to deliver a letter to Downing Street to underscore the importance of addressing the issue promptly. Gigi lost her life in a nursery in Cheadle Hulme, Greater Manchester, where she was found suffocated after being placed face-down, tightly swaddled, and on a bean bag. The nursery worker responsible, Kate Roughley, was subsequently sentenced to 14 years in prison for manslaughter.
In an interview with The Mirror, John expressed the profound sorrow of losing a child under such circumstances and the frustration over the continuation of unsafe practices within nurseries. The couple initiated the “Campaign for Gigi” last year, advocating for essential reforms such as clear statutory requirements for safer sleep practices, unannounced and more frequent regulatory inspections by Ofsted, and mandatory CCTV installation in nurseries. John emphasized that these changes are straightforward and crucial for ensuring children’s safety.
Katie raised concerns about potential funding constraints hindering necessary actions, stressing that no financial consideration should outweigh the protection of children’s lives. Describing Gigi as a joyful soul with an infectious smile, Katie highlighted the need for her daughter’s tragic fate to lead to meaningful reforms that prevent similar tragedies from occurring. She referenced other distressing incidents in nurseries, emphasizing the urgent need for comprehensive safety measures to protect all children in such environments.
In a direct plea to Keir Starmer, John urged immediate action to prioritize children’s safety and prevent any future tragedies, emphasizing the urgency of implementing the proposed reforms without delay. Tom Morrison, the Liberal Democrat MP for Cheadle, expressed a mix of sadness and frustration over the lack of progress in enhancing nursery safety since Gigi’s passing, echoing the family’s calls for swift and effective measures to prevent such incidents in the future.
