“Duchess of Edinburgh Advocates for Women in Sudan Crisis”

The Duchess of Edinburgh emphasized the crucial role of women in rebuilding and maintaining peace in war-torn conflict zones. Addressing the ongoing 1,000-day civil war in Sudan, which has led to a severe humanitarian crisis affecting over a third of the population, Sophie expressed her optimism for the future of the conflict-affected generations.

Having personally visited the Chad-Sudan border to witness the conflict’s impact and interact with young women and girls supported by Plan International UK, the Duchess highlighted the urgent need for assistance for the affected people. She underscored the significance of global attention to the crisis, which has resulted in the most severe humanitarian situation worldwide.

The conflict in Sudan has caused the breakdown of essential services, with a significant percentage of hospitals and health facilities non-operational, leaving a large portion of the population without access to healthcare. Additionally, Sudan is facing the world’s largest food crisis, with millions of people experiencing acute food insecurity, leading to dire living conditions and increased vulnerability to diseases.

Reflecting on her visit to the Adré transit camp, where she heard heartbreaking stories of loss and resilience, Sophie emphasized the extraordinary strength and leadership demonstrated by women in crisis situations. She stressed that women play a central role in not only surviving crises but also in rebuilding communities and striving for lasting peace when empowered and supported.

The Duchess, as a senior member of the royal family, has actively raised awareness about the impact of conflict, particularly gender-based violence, on individuals worldwide. Advocating for the Women, Peace, and Security agenda, she called for urgent action to end the devastating conflict in Sudan and provide support for affected families to rebuild their lives safely.

Recent calls from leading aid agencies in the UK urge the government to intervene promptly to prevent further catastrophe in Sudan. Highlighting the immense suffering and urgent needs on the ground, organizations are appealing for sustained humanitarian support and access to ensure the well-being of those affected by the conflict.

Amidst the unimaginable circumstances in Sudan, efforts by humanitarian organizations like Action Against Hunger and Plan International are providing life-saving assistance to vulnerable populations, including women, children, and people with disabilities. Urging for increased funding and unrestricted aid access, these organizations emphasize the critical importance of global support in saving lives and alleviating the suffering in Sudan.
