“Sky Introduces Real Time Feature to Reduce Streaming Delay”

Sky is set to introduce a new feature called Real Time for Sky users, just in time for the upcoming World Cup. The Real Time upgrade aims to minimize the streaming delay that many viewers currently experience, particularly during sports events. Traditional services like BBC iPlayer and ITVX often lag behind by up to 40 seconds compared to terrestrial and satellite broadcasts, leading to frustrating moments where neighbors react to events before they are seen on screen. With Real Time, Sky plans to significantly reduce this delay, providing a more immediate viewing experience for its users.

Initially launched for Premier League matches in 2024, the lower-latency streaming technology is now being extended to include BBC and ITV coverage, ensuring it is available for major events like the World Cup.

According to a statement from Sky, the Real Time feature will be available on Sky Glass and Sky Stream, both powered by Sky OS. The aim is to bring live sports closer to the moment by minimizing the latency between the live action and what viewers see on their screens. This feature will be accessible during select live sports broadcasts, including the World Cup matches on BBC and ITV, allowing fans to follow games with reduced lag and fewer spoilers.

To activate Real Time on their screens, viewers can opt for the feature during supported live sports broadcasts by selecting the Real Time option available on screen. This functionality can be accessed on both Sky Glass and Sky Stream devices through an opt-in button or specific channels, such as BBC One HD RT (EPG channels 926–944) and ITV1 HD RT (EPG channel 945).

The move towards a streaming-focused future is crucial for Sky, as Sky Glass and Sky Stream mark a shift away from the satellite-based Sky Q platform. These services operate over broadband, offering advantages like easy self-installation, frequent software updates, and seamless integration with popular streaming platforms such as Netflix, Apple TV+, and Disney+.

For those contemplating a switch, Sky Glass and Sky Stream remain central to Sky’s strategy, emphasizing internet-delivered television and enhanced streaming experiences for its users.
