ICE agents in Minnesota have started using a new unsettling phrase in the aftermath of Renee Good’s tragic death in the city. Recent videos have surfaced showing officers intimidating peaceful protesters to stop following them or comply with their orders, often asking, “Have you not learned?” in reference to the fatal shooting incident by an ICE agent last week.
The influx of anti-Migrant personnel into the state by Donald Trump’s administration has escalated tensions. Good was fatally shot by an ICE officer while attempting to maneuver her car around him and drive away. Despite video evidence indicating she posed no threat, Trump officials labeled her a “domestic terrorist” and defended the agent’s actions as self-defense.
Several prosecutors, including First Assistant US Attorney Joe Thompson, have resigned over the Justice Department’s handling of the shooting. In response to the deployment of over 2,000 immigration officers in Minnesota, the state, along with Minneapolis and St. Paul, filed a lawsuit against President Donald Trump’s administration to curb the surge, alleging violations of constitutional rights.
The lawsuit argues that Homeland Security’s actions target a progressive state that supports Democrats and immigrants, breaching constitutional protections. Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey expressed concerns about the significant impact of federal agents on daily life. Homeland Security, despite facing the lawsuit, remains firm in its enforcement actions, with spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin accusing Minnesota officials of neglecting public safety.
Incidents of ICE agents using tear gas and eye irritants on activists, along with student protests against immigration raids, have intensified the ongoing confrontations. Homeland Security reported over 2,000 arrests in the state since December and asserts its commitment to continued enforcement efforts. A judge has scheduled a status conference for Wednesday to address the escalating situation.
