An NBA game scheduled between the Golden State Warriors and Minnesota Timberwolves was postponed due to a fatal shooting by an ICE agent in downtown Minneapolis on Saturday. ESPN’s Shams Charania reported that the game has been rescheduled to 4.30pm local time on Sunday following the incident involving an unarmed man killed by federal agents during a protest.
The NBA issued an official statement explaining that the decision to postpone the game was made to prioritize the safety of the Minneapolis community. The rescheduled game is set to take place on January 25 at 4.30pm CT at Target Center.
ESPN host Ernie Johnson announced the game’s postponement live on air, expressing his inability to provide further details at that time. Johnson turned to fellow ESPN panelist Charles Barkley for a reaction, where Barkley emphasized the need for accountability and maturity in handling such tragic events.
The shooting occurred near the Target Center, with the shooter’s identity remaining undisclosed. This is not the first instance of a game being postponed due to a shooting involving law enforcement. In a previous incident during the 2020 NBA playoffs, the Milwaukee Bucks’ game was canceled as players protested against the police shooting of Jacob Blake, a Milwaukee resident.
