A popular B&B and café that had won several awards has closed down, delivering a significant setback to the community. The owner attributed the closure to the challenging location, which resulted in limited foot traffic.
The Dove Inn, known for its gluten-free offerings, ceased operations in Alburgh, Norfolk, after a successful run of two and a half years. Owner Sonya Resemblance expressed gratitude for the support received from the local clientele, as reported by The Sun.
This closure aligns with a broader trend affecting the pub and hospitality sector in the UK, with numerous establishments shutting down annually due to escalating expenses and evolving consumer preferences, leading to industry-wide challenges.
In a recent example, the well-liked White Horse on London End in Beaconsfield permanently closed its doors earlier in the month. Industry experts had previously highlighted concerns about the pub sector’s viability, citing substantial cost increases that led to the closure of 300 pubs in the initial quarter of 2025 alone.
Prior to its closure, the Dove Inn had been recognized as one of the top 50 cafés in the UK at the 2025 Small Business Awards. Under Sonya Resemblance’s management since July 2023, the establishment offered a range of meals, including brunch, lunch, and popular Sunday roasts, fostering community engagement and supporting mental health initiatives through events and job opportunities.
The café and B&B had also received accolades at the Luxlife Magazine’s Food and Drink Awards in Norfolk, winning titles such as Emerging Hospitality Business of the Year and B&B and Pub of the Year.
A distinguishing feature of the inn was its exclusively gluten-free menu, a source of pride for Sonya, who aimed to provide a safe dining experience for individuals with dietary restrictions.
In an announcement detailing the closure, Sonya expressed appreciation for the patrons and emphasized the positive impact the business had on the community by creating job opportunities and offering essential social spaces for mental well-being.
Despite efforts to sustain the business, challenges stemming from broader retail and hospitality issues led to the decision to close. Sonya acknowledged the location’s limitations but expressed gratitude for the loyal customer base that had supported the venture.
Following an outpouring of support from customers, the closure was confirmed on Friday, January 16, eliciting messages of sympathy and hope for a potential return in the future.
