Ministers are facing strong criticism over proposals for a massive Chinese embassy with over 200 underground rooms located near vital cables. MPs from different political parties are urging the Government to intervene and prevent the construction of this facility close to the Tower of London. Concerns have been raised after leaked plans revealed the presence of 208 basement rooms, raising fears of potential espionage amidst escalating tensions.
Sarah Champion, the chair of the International Development Agency, emphasized that security briefings consistently label China as a hostile state towards the UK. She firmly stated that the proposed mega embassy should not be allowed to proceed, citing China’s aggressive behavior both domestically and internationally.
A group of nine Labour MPs has written to Communities Secretary Steve Reed expressing concerns that the embassy could be utilized to escalate intimidation against dissidents. A decision on the project’s approval is anticipated by January 20, with indications suggesting that Keir Starmer may announce its green light.
The Conservative Party has voiced apprehensions that the super-embassy could serve as a platform for economic warfare. Shadow Home Office minister Alicia Kearns highlighted the importance of protecting the cables crucial for the economy, emphasizing the potential risks associated with the embassy’s proximity to these essential infrastructure elements.
Housing Minister Matthew Pennycook refrained from commenting on the ongoing case, emphasizing the need for a nuanced approach towards China. He acknowledged the multifaceted nature of the UK’s relationship with China, recognizing both the security challenges posed by the nation and the economic opportunities it presents.
Reports from The Times suggest that a decision on the embassy’s approval could be made before an anticipated visit by the Prime Minister to China, marking the first such visit since 2018. Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood and Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper have indicated that their reservations about the embassy application have been addressed, with China agreeing to consolidate its diplomats in London onto the new site.
No10 has previously stated that the mega-embassy would offer clear security benefits to the UK.
