While iCloud offers a seamless experience for device synchronization, its limited storage capacity prompts scammers to deceive users into providing sensitive data by creating a false sense of urgency. Although iCloud scams are not novel, Malwarebytes cybersecurity experts have observed a rise in deceptive emails alleging insufficient storage space. Scammers masquerade as Apple, falsely claiming that iCloud storage is full and backups are no longer functioning, prompting users to upgrade their storage plan through a malicious link designed to extract confidential information.
Malwarebytes cautioned, “The fear of losing precious photos is exploited by scammers to steal personal and financial data.” These deceptive emails aim to coerce users into making a payment to prevent deletion of files in their iCloud storage, directing them to fraudulent websites requesting personal and payment details.
To enhance user safety, new guidelines emphasize that Apple does not send unsolicited emails regarding iCloud storage issues. Legitimate alerts concerning storage capacity are displayed within device settings or official system notifications, not through unsolicited messages with external links. Users are advised to verify their iCloud usage directly through device settings, avoiding interaction with suspicious messages or websites.
Five essential rules for safeguarding iCloud accounts include accessing the account only through Apple’s official platforms, refraining from sharing passwords, verifying links before clicking, utilizing updated anti-malware software with web protection, and exercising caution when encountering suspicious websites or payment requests.
