The incident also claimed the life of 35-year-old Jason Laws. The explosion was caused by Reece Galbraith, who received a 14-year prison sentence for running the illicit operation in a ground-floor flat within a residential block.
The explosion resulted from an accumulation of butane during the production of drug-infused sweets by Galbraith and Laws. Archie’s mother, Katherine Errington, vividly described the harrowing experience of waking up to chaos and darkness after the blast. Despite the efforts of her partner and a neighbor to rescue her and her baby son, Finley, they tragically could not find Archie, leading to the heartbreaking realization of his passing.
In response to their devastating loss, Katherine and Robbie York have supported a Newcastle city council initiative aimed at preventing similar tragedies in the future. Katherine emphasized Archie’s helpful and caring nature, expressing her desire to assist others as he did, to prevent any family from enduring the same pain they have experienced.
Reflecting on the aftermath of the explosion, Katherine recounted the moments of fear and desperation while trapped in the rubble, awaiting news about her son’s fate. The heart-wrenching process of identifying Archie through dental records and his clothing added to the family’s immense grief.
