Former Red Bull executive Richard Hopkins has shared an update on Michael Schumacher’s well-being and expressed skepticism about the public ever seeing the Formula 1 icon again. Schumacher’s health status has remained undisclosed since the renowned racer suffered a severe head injury in a skiing mishap in December 2013.
After the accident over a decade ago, Schumacher, now 56, was placed in a medically induced coma and his health details have been closely guarded from public knowledge. Hopkins, who oversaw operations at Red Bull and developed a close bond with Schumacher during the latter’s racing career, emphasized the importance of maintaining confidentiality regarding Schumacher’s condition.
In a recent interview with SPORTbible via William Hill, Hopkins mentioned that he has not received recent updates on Schumacher’s health, noting that the racing legend has a personal Finnish doctor. He expressed his belief that Schumacher may not reappear publicly, respecting the family’s decision to keep his condition private.
Acknowledging his distance from Schumacher’s inner circle, Hopkins highlighted that despite their friendship dating back to the 1990s, he lacks the proximity to key figures like Jean Todt, Ross Brawn, and Gerhard Berger who are closer to Schumacher. He emphasized the importance of respecting the family’s wishes for privacy and confidentiality, even if he were privy to any information, as sharing details would go against their wishes.
Hopkins emphasized the level of discretion and respect surrounding Schumacher’s situation, suggesting that it is a universally understood expectation that visitors to Schumacher maintain confidentiality. He reiterated the significance of honoring the family’s wishes for privacy, underscoring that even if he possessed any insights, it would be inappropriate to disclose them.
