“Petition for Four-Day School Week Sparks Debate”

A significant number of voters are advocating for schools to transition to four-day weeks by extending each school day by an hour. Over 126,000 signatures have been gathered on a petition calling for this change, which will be discussed by MPs on Monday. Despite the public support, the Department for Education (DfE) has stated that they do not plan to implement this proposal.

Proponents argue that shortening the school week would facilitate teacher recruitment and retention. On the other hand, the Government contends that such a move would pose challenges for parents who would need to arrange alternative childcare. The debate on this issue is set to take place in Westminster Hall due to the high number of petition signatories.

The petition, initiated by Steve Smith, emphasizes the need to mandate all schools to adopt a four-day school week with longer daily hours. The 4 Day Week Campaign, led by Joe Ryle, advocates for reduced working hours for teachers without salary cuts and stresses the importance of addressing the work-life balance in the education sector.

While the campaign pushes for the benefits of a four-day school week, the DfE has rejected the idea, citing the requirement for state-funded mainstream schools to offer a minimum of 32 hours and 30 minutes per week. The DfE explained that implementing a four-day week while meeting the minimum weekly hours would necessitate significantly longer school days, impacting parents and potentially straining families financially, as well as affecting the economy.

Overall, the debate surrounding the transition to a four-day school week continues to spark discussions and considerations among stakeholders in the education sector.
