British Couple’s Son Worried Amid Iran Embassy Closure

The son of a British couple detained in Iran expressed concern for their safety following the closure of the UK embassy in Tehran during widespread anti-regime protests.

Craig and Lindsay Foreman, who had been traveling the world on a motorbike, were arrested by Iranian authorities in January 2025 on spying charges. Despite denying the allegations, they are currently held in a daunting Iranian prison. Their son, Joe Bennett, described the precarious situation his parents face in jail amidst the mass protests engulfing the nation, leading to arrests, violence, and executions.

Joe revealed that the prisons in Iran are facing overcrowding due to the high number of arrests during the protests. He last spoke to his parents on Wednesday, where they described the unsafe and frightening conditions inside the jail.

In an interview with BBC Newsnight, Joe highlighted the unsanitary conditions in the prison, including vermin infestation and overcrowding exacerbated by the ongoing protests. He mentioned that fights break out frequently, audible even over the phone conversations with his mother.

The temporary closure of the UK embassy in Tehran added to Joe’s worries about securing his parents’ freedom. A government spokesperson announced the embassy’s closure, with operations moving remotely, as per updated Foreign Office travel advice.

Joe explained that his parents had planned to seek refuge at the British embassy upon release from jail, but with the closure, their options are limited. Legal representatives in Tehran have submitted a bail application on behalf of Craig and Lindsay.

Expressing uncertainty about their next steps, Joe underscored the importance of the embassy as a safe haven for his parents. He mentioned ongoing assessments by the Foreign and Commonwealth Development Office regarding the situation.

Describing the dire conditions at Evin Prison, Joe recounted his parents’ health struggles, including Lindsay’s skin condition due to poor ventilation and Craig’s significant weight loss and dental issues. The lack of proper nutrition and medical care has left the couple physically deteriorating.

The Mirror has reached out to the Foreign and Commonwealth Development Office for further comment on the situation.
