European politicians have issued a stern warning to the US President as NATO troops arrive in Greenland amid concerns that President Donald Trump might consider invading the island. Trump has been vocal about his desire to acquire Greenland, an autonomous region of Denmark. In response to Trump’s statements, a French military unit has landed in Nuuk, Greenland’s capital, alongside troops from the UK, Germany, Sweden, and Norway.
The arrival of these NATO soldiers coincides with a high-level meeting between Danish ministers and US politicians JD Vance and Marco Rubio, which ended without a resolution. Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen expressed a fundamental disagreement over Greenland’s future, highlighting Trump’s persistence in wanting to “conquer” the island.
The joint military exercises, known as Operation Arctic Endurance, led by Denmark, have seen an increase in military presence on Greenland. The objective is to enhance NATO’s presence in the Arctic for both European and transatlantic security interests. The UK has confirmed sending a military officer to participate in reconnaissance activities ahead of the exercises, emphasizing the collective effort to reinforce security in the High North.
Germany also announced sending a small troop contingent to Greenland, while the duration of the French military presence remains undisclosed. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has warned that any attempt by Trump to seize Greenland would jeopardize NATO’s integrity.
Trump’s ambitions to control Greenland have raised tensions internationally, with his rationale being to prevent China and Russia from gaining influence. He emphasized the need to defend ownership rather than leases, hinting at a potential forceful acquisition if necessary.
