The suggestion of implementing a four-day school week has been rejected by an education minister who expressed concerns about potential negative impacts on school activities and student learning. Children’s minister Josh MacAlister acknowledged the appeal of the idea but emphasized that reducing the school week could hinder academic progress and create challenges for families. While acknowledging the need for improvements in teaching flexibility, MacAlister highlighted ongoing efforts in this area.
The Government’s response comes after over 125,000 individuals signed a petition advocating for a shorter school week. However, MacAlister affirmed that there are no plans to alter the current school week structure. He stressed the importance of schools having sufficient time to deliver quality education, including breaks and extracurricular opportunities.
MacAlister reiterated the Government’s commitment to a minimum school week of 32.5 hours for all state-funded mainstream schools to ensure fairness and high educational standards. He also noted that schools are encouraged to extend their hours beyond the minimum requirement to enhance student development and prioritize school objectives.
Regarding teacher workloads, MacAlister acknowledged the challenges faced by educators, leading to high turnover rates. He mentioned positive trends in reducing teacher work hours compared to previous years, citing a recent survey on working conditions. While recognizing the need for further improvements in making teaching a sustainable career choice, he highlighted progress in retention and recruitment efforts.
