“UK Set to Transition from Landlines to VoIP by 2027”

A significant transition is on the horizon for communication in UK households. Starting in January of the upcoming year, consumers nationwide will be shifting away from the traditional copper-wire phone lines, known as the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN), to a new technology known as Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP).

VoIP is a modern system that utilizes an internet connection for making phone calls instead of the conventional analogue wiring. Although the change may seem daunting, there are notable advantages to embracing this new technology.

Users of VoIP can expect improved call quality, more dependable connections, and additional features such as spam call protection and call forwarding capabilities.

Despite the long-planned transition, a recent report by the telecoms team at Phonely reveals that a significant portion of UK adults aged over 50 are unaware of the impending shift away from traditional landlines, even with the extended deadline set at January 31, 2027.

Phonely cautions that this lack of awareness could result in a rush of last-minute upgrades in 2026, potentially leading to issues like equipment shortages, engineer backlogs, installation delays in rural areas, and increased strain on telecom providers.

With less than a year left until the UK’s analogue landline network is permanently phased out, Phonely highlighted that millions of individuals over the age of 50 are still uninformed about the transition. This lack of awareness could potentially cause chaos if a majority delays the move until they are compelled to switch.

Bryn Thompson, Director at Phonely, emphasized, “The extension to 2027 has created a false sense of security. The fact that nearly six in ten over-50s are unaware that this transition is happening should be concerning to all stakeholders. Delaying the switch risks chaos at the last minute.”

Dan Skipper, Chief Executive of Age UK Norwich, added that these changes may raise concerns for residents, especially for older individuals who rely on their landline for social connections and safety. He advised contacting telephone providers to understand the available options for the transition.

In summary, the UK’s copper-based PSTN network is being phased out and replaced by digital VoIP services. After January 31, 2027, traditional analogue landlines will no longer function, with calls being made through broadband connections. While many younger households have already shifted to mobile phones, a significant number of individuals over 50, particularly in rural areas, still rely on landlines for everyday communication and emergency purposes.

Telephone providers are expected to communicate directly with customers about the transition and its steps. The change is not expected to incur additional costs for households, as most will only require a broadband connection and a compatible phone. However, concerns have been raised regarding internet access for older consumers who are not online. Solutions for those without internet access are being explored, and individuals worried about the change are encouraged to contact their phone provider for guidance on available options.
