Ministry of Justice Fights Killer’s Release After 36 Years

The Ministry of Justice is making a final attempt to prevent the release of a murderer who killed a doctor 36 years ago. Reginald Wilson brutally attacked Dr. David Birkett in 1990 after gaining entry to his home under false pretenses. Wilson was initially sentenced to life in prison for murder but later had his term reduced to 30 years following an appeal.

Recently, the Parole Board assessed Wilson as suitable for release, citing his positive progress and the lack of a threat to public safety. Justice Secretary David Lammy sought a review of this decision, but the Parole Board rejected the request. However, the Ministry of Justice intervened, requesting a fresh review due to newly revealed information.

Wilson, now known as Reginald Zenshen, assaulted the doctor with a hammer, leading to a horrific crime scene described by Cleveland Police as one of the most violent they had encountered. Wilson’s disdain for authority was evident through his threatening letters and plans to harm law enforcement officers.

Following his arrest, a cache of weapons was discovered at Wilson’s residence. Despite his history of violence and escape attempts, Wilson was considered for release in 2021 due to purported progress and behavioral changes while in custody. The Ministry of Justice expressed concern over the decision to release Wilson, emphasizing the severity of his crime.

The parole decision may be revisited based on new information, underscoring the ongoing scrutiny surrounding Wilson’s potential release.
