Nick Reiner, who is accused of murdering his parents, Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner, has been blocked from accessing a $1.5 million US trust fund intended for his legal defense. Court documents reveal that Reiner was attempting to claim funds from a trust established by his parents in 1993.
Trustees cited the “slayer statute,” a California law that prohibits individuals from inheriting assets from someone they have intentionally killed, as the reason for denying Reiner’s request. Rob Reiner, a renowned director and actor, and Michele Singer Reiner, a photographer and producer, were fatally stabbed in their California home on December 14, 2025. Subsequently, their son Nick Reiner was taken into custody.
Facing murder charges, the 32-year-old pleaded not guilty after being indicted by a Los Angeles County grand jury, which alleged premeditation in the attack on his parents. This circumstance, among others, could lead to the possibility of the death penalty. District Attorney Nathan Hochman is yet to decide on pursuing this penalty.
Reiner, represented by public defender Kimberly Greene, is set for a pretrial hearing in September. He sought access to the trust fund, which, along with individual trust funds for Reiner’s siblings, held assets totaling at least $1.5 million US. Private attorney Alan Jackson, initially retained for Reiner’s defense, departed without explanation, leading Reiner’s siblings to shift their stance on covering his legal expenses.
