“Woman intentionally blinds herself to fulfill lifelong desire”

Jewel Shuping, a woman with Body Integrity Identity Disorder (BIID), deliberately made herself blind to fulfill her lifelong desire. BIID is a psychological condition where individuals feel they should be disabled despite being physically healthy.

Since childhood, Jewel believed she was meant to be blind and even attempted to harm her eyes by staring at the sun for extended periods. As she grew older, she embraced her desire to be blind by adopting blind behaviors like using a white cane and learning Braille.

In 2006, Jewel found a psychologist willing to help her achieve blindness by pouring drain cleaner into her eyes. The painful process irreversibly damaged her sight, fulfilling her lifelong wish.

Despite facing backlash from family members, Jewel insists she has never been happier since becoming blind. She emphasizes the need for safer approaches for individuals with BIID, warning against extreme measures like hers.

Jewel aims to raise awareness about BIID and urges others to seek professional help rather than resorting to dangerous methods like self-inflicted blindness.
