Marco Rubio, the United States Secretary of State, is scheduled to hold discussions with Danish representatives regarding President Donald Trump’s proposal to acquire Greenland. Rubio informed journalists today that the meeting will take place next week.
The White House recently confirmed Trump’s interest in “taking over” Greenland before the end of his term. While Trump prefers to negotiate a purchase of Greenland from Denmark, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stated that the President is prepared to resort to military action if Denmark refuses.
Leavitt emphasized that President Trump views obtaining Greenland as a crucial national security objective for the United States to maintain dominance in the Arctic region. She highlighted that the administration is exploring various strategies to achieve this foreign policy goal, including the option of deploying the US military.
Trump faced backlash from European leaders over his pursuit of Greenland, with Denmark cautioning that a territorial acquisition could jeopardize the NATO alliance. In response on Truth Social, Trump insinuated that NATO may not provide support when needed, failing to acknowledge NATO’s past support for the US after the September 11, 2001 attacks.
In his online remarks, Trump criticized Norway for not awarding him the Nobel Prize and suggested that China and Russia would disregard NATO in the absence of US involvement. Despite his criticisms, Trump affirmed the US’s commitment to NATO, stating, “We will always stand by NATO, even if they do not reciprocate.”
