“UK on High Alert as Storm Goretti Brings Red Weather Warning”

The Met Office has issued a red weather warning to approximately 500,000 mobile phones across the UK in anticipation of Storm Goretti. This alert indicates that strong winds in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly are expected to cause structural damage, flying debris, and power outages tonight, posing a significant risk to life.

Storm Goretti, the first named storm of 2026, has been described by the Met Office as a “multi-hazard event” that is forecasted to be more powerful than previous storms like Storm Ciarán in 2023 and the Great Storm of 1987. This storm is classified as a “weather bomb,” characterized by intense winds revolving around a low-pressure system.

The red warning, an uncommonly severe alert, will be effective from 16:00 to 23:00. Travel disruptions are anticipated, and power cuts may impact various services, including mobile phone networks.

To ensure safety, the public is strongly advised to remain indoors, avoid coastal areas, and take necessary precautions. A red weather warning from the Met Office is only issued in the most extreme circumstances.

A spokesperson from the Cabinet Office confirmed the red warning for the Isles of Scilly and Cornwall and announced the dispatch of Emergency Alerts to residents in these regions. These alerts will provide crucial information and safety guidelines. The UK Government is well-prepared to manage severe winter weather and is collaborating with local authorities, emergency services, and other organizations to address any disruptions effectively.
