“UK Announces Stricter Road Safety Measures by 2035”

British drivers are set to face stricter regulations concerning drink driving, seatbelt usage, and eye examinations in a significant overhaul of road safety protocols. This initiative, unveiled today by government officials, aims to reduce road fatalities and severe injuries by 65% overall and by 70% for individuals under 16 by the year 2035.

The new measures include implementing penalty points for drivers who do not wear seatbelts or fail to ensure children are properly secured. There is also a proposal to potentially lower the drink-driving limit and mandate convicted drink-drivers to use alcohol level testing devices in their vehicles before driving.

Additionally, the strategy introduces 18 new vehicle safety technologies, such as autonomous emergency braking (AEB) and lane-keeping assistance. Meera Naran MBE, a road safety advocate who tragically lost her son in a car accident, has been advocating for legislation known as Dev’s Law, which would require all vehicles to be equipped with AEB.

Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander emphasized the importance of these new regulations, stating that every road fatality is a devastating event for families and communities. The government is committed to enhancing road safety and reducing accidents through decisive actions.

The strategy also addresses specific demographics at higher risk, such as young drivers aged 17-24 and elderly drivers over 70. Proposed measures include extended learning periods for new drivers and mandatory eyesight tests for older drivers. There is also a consultation on potentially lowering the drink drive limit in England and Wales.

Furthermore, the plan aims to tackle issues like illegal number plates, uninsured drivers, and the safety of vulnerable road users like motorcyclists and child pedestrians. By 2024, over 1,600 individuals lost their lives in traffic incidents in Britain, highlighting the urgency for improved road safety measures.

Various organizations, including the AA and IAM RoadSmart, have expressed support for the government’s comprehensive road safety strategy, emphasizing the need for collective efforts to reduce road accidents and fatalities. The focus on education, enforcement, and technological advancements underscores the holistic approach to enhancing road safety for all users.
