“TUC Urges UK-EU Customs Union Amid Trump Uncertainties”

The head of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) has emphasized the importance of the UK strengthening its connections with Europe due to concerns about the reliability of Donald Trump as a partner. Paul Nowak, speaking almost ten years after the EU referendum, noted a shift in attitudes among both Leavers and Remainers who now seek to rectify the problematic Brexit deal. Nowak advocated for a UK-EU customs union to facilitate tariff-free trade while ensuring common standards for traded goods.

These remarks followed a divergence in opinion within the Labour Party, with Wes Streeting expressing support for a customs union deal with the EU, contrary to Keir Starmer’s stance. Nowak stressed the significance of fostering a robust working relationship with the EU, especially amidst the uncertainties caused by the Trump administration. He highlighted the necessity of close collaboration with European partners, not only in trade but also in addressing wider global issues.

The TUC General Secretary emphasized the pragmatic approach of exploring all potential options, including a customs union, to benefit workers in key industries like automotive, aerospace, and chemicals that rely on seamless trade with Europe. He underscored the impact on everyday consumers, pointing out the Brexit-related price increases faced at supermarkets. Dismissing lingering Brexit divisions, Nowak reiterated the imperative of securing a favorable trading arrangement with the EU for the well-being of working people in the UK.

In light of Trump’s perceived unreliability, Nowak underscored the economic, political, and national security significance of closer ties with Europe. He emphasized the need for enhanced cooperation with the EU, not only economically but also in broader geopolitical matters concerning countries like Ukraine.
