President Donald Trump criticized Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Khamenei, labeling him a “sick man” and Iran as the “worst place to live” following anti-government protests that reportedly resulted in over 3,000 deaths.
In response, Ayatollah Khamenei condemned Trump as a “criminal” for allegedly supporting the protesters, leading to the casualties. Trump, in an interview with Politico, called for new leadership in Iran, stating that Khamenei should govern the country better and cease the violence.
Khamenei, in a televised speech, disclosed that “several thousand” people had died during the protests and accused the US president of instigating the unrest by endorsing the dissenters. He also accused the US of seeking control over Iran’s resources, branding Trump as a criminal for the damages caused.
The verbal exchanges continued with Trump mentioning Iran’s decision to halt the execution of hundreds of protesters, indicating a possible shift away from military action. Tehran’s Prosecutor General dismissed Trump’s comments as irrelevant and emphasized a strong stance against any provocations.
Trump had previously offered support to the Iranian protesters and warned of consequences if the violence persisted. Khamenei blamed the rioters for using foreign-supplied ammunition and emphasized the need to address both domestic and international offenders.
The escalating rhetoric between the two leaders came amidst tensions following the protests in Iran, with Trump hinting at a potential change in approach while Khamenei stood firm against external interference.
