“Tragic Shark Attack Claims Life of Minnesota Woman in US Virgin Islands”

A woman tragically lost her life in a fatal shark attack while vacationing, where witnesses discovered her in a pool of blood with a severed arm.

The victim, identified as Arlene Lillis, 56, was swimming close to the shoreline in the US Virgin Islands when bystanders heard a distressing scream. Initially thought to be struggling in the water, onlookers soon noticed significant blood loss from her injured arm.

Following the shark encounter, Lillis was found with her arm missing below the elbow and was barely able to communicate when rescued. Two brave swimmers successfully brought her to shore, quickly calling for medical assistance and applying a makeshift tourniquet to stem the bleeding.

Christopher Carroll, a former lifeguard involved in the rescue, shared, “She was speaking. I tried to keep her calm.” Another rescuer, Ryan Connot, mentioned that Lillis managed to utter her name but expressed fears of imminent death. Despite efforts to save her, she succumbed to the severe blood loss.

Arlene, described by her neighbor Andrew Gamble as a devoted mother from Minnesota, USA, was known for her compassionate nature, exemplified by her care for an injured stray dog.

Authorities reported that the attack took place near the shore on western St Croix during Thursday afternoon. Despite prompt emergency response efforts, Lillis, a frequent visitor to the area, could not be saved and passed away from her injuries.

While the specific shark species involved remains unconfirmed, officials noted that shark incidents are uncommon in the US Virgin Islands. Nicole Angeli from the US Virgin Islands Department of Planning and Natural Resources highlighted the rarity of such encounters resulting in bites.

The investigation into the incident is ongoing, with plans to enhance safety measures and provide increased wildlife awareness information at local establishments. Notably, this was the second shark-related incident in the region in the past decade.

In total, there have been 79 unprovoked shark attacks in the Caribbean since 1749, including four in the US Virgin Islands, according to data from the International Shark Attack File based in Florida.
