“Tragic Crane Collapse Derails Thai Passenger Train, 29 Dead”

A tragic incident occurred in north-eastern Thailand when a construction crane fell onto a moving passenger train, resulting in a devastating derailment that claimed the lives of at least 29 individuals. The derailment, which took place on a section of a high-speed rail project linking China with south-east Asia, left another 64 people injured, with rescue efforts ongoing to search for survivors and provide aid.

According to officials, the crane was being utilized in the construction of an elevated railway segment when it collapsed onto the train en route from Bangkok to Ubon Ratchathani province. Distressing images from the scene depicted smoke billowing above the wreckage, with construction equipment dangling between concrete support pillars and rescue workers navigating overturned train carriages with significant damage.

Transport Minister Piphat Ratchakitprakan disclosed that 195 passengers were onboard the train, emphasizing the commencement of an investigation into the tragic incident. The elevated segment that collapsed forms part of a significant Thai-Chinese connectivity project between Bangkok and Nong Khai province near the Laos border.

Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has demanded accountability for the catastrophe, asserting that negligence likely played a role. The PM highlighted the necessity of a thorough investigation to uncover any construction errors or deviations from safety protocols that may have contributed to the devastating crane collapse.

The incident has brought into question the safety measures and protocols involved in the expansive high-speed rail project connecting China and south-east Asia. As rescue operations continue and the death toll mounts, authorities are grappling with the aftermath of this tragic event that has shaken the nation.
