A notorious British criminal referred to as The One has been implicated in a substantial cocaine smuggling operation with ousted Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro, according to a US indictment. Robert Dawes, also known as The Voice, received a 22-year prison sentence in France for orchestrating a £216 million drug shipment that authorities now link to Maduro’s involvement. Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, are currently detained in New York, facing multiple charges such as conspiracy to commit narco-terrorism, cocaine trafficking, and possession of weapons targeted at the US.
The indictment alleges that Maduro, along with two high-ranking officials, collaborated in trafficking 1.3 tonnes of cocaine on an Air France flight from Caracas to Paris in 2013. The illicit substances were concealed in 31 unclaimed suitcases on the flight, indicating possible complicity of security personnel at Maiquetia Airport in Caracas. Following the seizure, Maduro reportedly held an emergency meeting with other officials to discuss future drug trafficking strategies, avoiding the airport route to evade detection.
The US Department of Justice asserts that Maduro instructed his associates to utilize alternative drug trafficking routes to the US and orchestrated the arrest of Venezuelan military personnel to divert attention from his involvement in the operation. Despite the indictment not mentioning Dawes, it highlights Maduro’s longstanding collaboration with violent drug traffickers and narco-terrorists, relying on corrupt officials across regions to distribute large quantities of cocaine to the United States.
In connection with the significant cocaine seizure, Venezuelan authorities apprehended 22 individuals, including members of the National Guard and airport personnel, marking one of the largest drug busts in France. Dawes, known for his criminal network spanning multiple countries, has a history of criminal activities dating back to his youth, including convictions for robbery, drug offenses, and assault.
Maduro, who denies allegations of being a drug cartel leader, has refuted claims, attributing the accusations to political motives aimed at destabilizing his regime. The legitimacy of the operation under international law has sparked debates, with Maduro pleading not guilty during court proceedings.
