“Sky Q Shifts Focus to Internet-Based Products, Opening Door for New Competitor”

Sky Q, a highly acclaimed set-top box, is known for its exceptional features such as live TV recording, access to premium channels, and popular streaming apps like Disney+ and Netflix. Despite its popularity, Sky is shifting focus from its satellite-based platform to internet-based products like the Sky Stream box and Sky Glass TV. This transition creates an opportunity for a new competitor to enter the market.

Humax has introduced the Aura EZ 4K TV Recorder, a device that shares many similarities with Sky Q. Equipped with a 2TB hard drive for storing TV shows, movies, and sports, the Aura EZ offers a valuable option for physical recordings as they become less common. Additionally, the box is powered by Freely, allowing users to watch live TV over broadband. Freely, developed by the Freeview team, provides over 60 live channels and a vast library of on-demand content, making it a versatile and user-friendly choice.

The Aura EZ features 4K HDR picture quality, Dolby Digital Plus audio, and an integrated TV guide displaying current and upcoming programs. Users can manage the box remotely through the Humax Aura EZ smartphone app, enabling convenient access to schedules and recordings from anywhere. While Freely may not match Sky’s premium sports and movie offerings, it is a free service without any subscription fees.

Scheduled for release in the UK in February 2026 at a retail price of £249, the Humax Aura EZ aims to compete in the evolving market. In a parallel move, Sky has announced a new subscription bundle offering access to major streaming services like Disney+, Netflix, Hayu, and HBO Max at a reduced monthly rate of £24. This bundle, part of Sky’s Ultimate TV plan, also includes over 130 premium channels, enhancing the viewing experience for customers. Additionally, Sky Cinema subscribers will gain a new Disney movie channel directly integrated into the TV guide.

The comprehensive £24 bundle comprises:
– Netflix Standard with Ads
– Disney+ Standard with Ads (starting from March)
– HBO Max Basic with Ads (from March 26)
– Hayu (available from July, with selected content accessible from March)
– Over 130 Sky channels

Sky’s strategic move aims to consolidate multiple streaming platforms into a single subscription, providing value and convenience to customers.
