The head of the sole registered anti-war party in Russia affirmed his commitment to remain in the country and continue advocating for change, despite mounting pressure from the authorities resulting in the party’s disqualification from the upcoming parliamentary elections. The Supreme Court’s recent ruling excluded the post-Soviet liberal party Yabloko, translating to “apple” in Russian, from the September elections. Nikolai Rybakov, the party leader, expressed that the decision was a reflection of the authorities’ unease over the resonance of their message to end the prolonged conflict in Ukraine among voters.
Rybakov emphasized the significance of the overwhelming public support they have garnered, highlighting the vocal demonstration of hundreds of supporters outside the court chanting “shame” following the verdict. Yabloko, previously a prominent voice in parliament and a government critic, now holds only a few regional seats and lacks representation in the State Duma, where the United Russia party, backed by Putin, holds sway.
While United Russia is poised to maintain its dominance in the upcoming elections, Rybakov asserted that Yabloko would present a stronger challenge than anticipated if permitted to participate. The party is currently appealing the Supreme Court’s decision, which stemmed from allegations of undisclosed campaign assistance from Western sources, among other charges vehemently denied by Yabloko.
In a statement from his office adorned with a placard urging “People, don’t kill each other,” Rybakov underscored that the journey ahead was just beginning, as more individuals were starting to take notice and engage. Despite the stringent censorship laws and wartime legislation driving many dissenting voices to exile or prosecution, the 47-year-old opposition figure affirmed his decision to remain in Russia.
Public sentiment against the conflict remains challenging to gauge due to stringent state controls, yet the Levada Center reported a decline in support for Russian military actions in Ukraine to 66% in July, the lowest level since February 2022. Rybakov emphasized that Yabloko’s succinct call for peace and a flourishing democratic Russia had resonated with numerous new supporters, reflecting a substantial segment of society yearning for an end to the war.
The party leader stressed that while Yabloko may face obstacles and coercive measures, the shared convictions of millions aligned with their cause could not be suppressed. Social media platforms have been abuzz with videos backing Yabloko, showcasing individuals holding apples as a symbolic gesture of support or dancing to Russian tunes referencing apples when asked about their election preferences for the upcoming polls.
