The co-founder of the well-known Australian rock band Midnight Oil, Rob Hirst, has passed away. The band announced the sad news of his death, mentioning that he is now at peace, free from suffering. Rob, who was 70 years old, was a key member of the group, known for their politically charged songs like Beds are Burning and The Dead Heart from the successful 1987 album, Diesel and Dust.
Midnight Oil was established in 1976 by Hirst and guitarist Jim Moginie, later joined by singer Peter Garret. Despite being nominated for Grammy Awards in 1989 and 1991, the band did not win. After disbanding in 2002, they reunited in 2016 until 2022.
In a previous interview with The Guardian, Jim described Rob as the driving force behind Midnight Oil, both on and off stage. Rob, who battled cancer, tried various treatments and even auctioned a drum set to raise funds for struggling Australian musicians.
Following his passing, fans and fellow musicians paid tribute to Rob, with Australian singer Jimmy Barnes acknowledging his significant impact on Australian culture. Additionally, Hoodoo Gurus honored Rob’s friendship with bassist Rick Grossman, praising his creativity and spirit.
Rob’s remarkable talent and contributions to the music industry will be dearly missed.
