The Billy Bishop Legion in Vancouver’s Kitsilano area offers an unexpected scene on a regular Thursday. Among the veterans enjoying drinks in the pub downstairs, you’ll find yoga enthusiasts like Hannah, who appreciates the sense of belonging and grounding she finds during her yoga sessions.
Legions nationwide, traditionally home to veterans, are now striving to attract a younger demographic like Hannah. They are achieving this through creative events, affordable dining options, and a welcoming atmosphere that resonates with many community members seeking connection. This year, in celebration of the Royal Canadian Legion’s 100th anniversary, first-time joiners are granted free membership across the country.
Notably, Legion volunteers highlight that military experience is not a prerequisite for participation. For Hannah, who has family ties to the military, visiting the Legion evokes a sense of connection with her heritage and a feeling of being at home.
While Legions have historically been centers for veteran support and community events, they are evolving to welcome new faces. Nujma Bond, the national spokesperson for the Royal Canadian Legion, emphasized the ongoing commitment to traditional Legion activities while embracing growth and new ideas. The organization has already seen a surge in membership, welcoming over 100,000 new members in 2026, bringing the total membership to over 300,000.
Despite this growth, some Legions have faced closures due to financial and administrative challenges. Dennis Mills, President of the Bala Legion in Muskoka Lakes, Ontario, shared the branch’s revival story after facing closure a decade ago. The Bala Legion now offers affordable dining, concerts, and has opened its doors to all community members. Looking ahead, the Legion plans to expand its services by offering 110 affordable rental units to sustain its operations.
Mills emphasized the importance of attracting new members to ensure the Legion’s continued vitality and service to the community. He urged all Canadians to consider joining to support the Legion’s mission.
