Labour Government Failing Working Class: Social Worker’s Plea

Having worked as a social worker for many years, I have firsthand experience of the challenges faced by public service workers. Despite being 18 months into a Labour government, the situation remains dire for my colleagues.

Not only have our salaries been consistently reduced while the cost of living continues to rise, but we have also witnessed the systematic dismantling of essential services that were once the backbone of our communities.

Throughout my career within a local authority, I have witnessed the detrimental effects of aggressive asset-stripping, with £15 billion worth of assets sold off since 2010. In my hometown of Bolton, council funding has been slashed by over 25% during the same period, impacting the lives of ordinary citizens who rely on public services.

Despite promises of national renewal, the Labour party has not effectively addressed these issues. To govern in the true spirit of labor, the party must prioritize the well-being of the working class over other interests, such as financial markets and corporate influence.

It is essential for Labour to focus on improving living standards by increasing wages and reducing expenses, rather than just talking about it. Initiatives like providing inflation-proof pay rises to public workers and implementing sector-wide collective bargaining through an Employment Rights Bill 2.0 can make a real difference.

Investing in public services and prioritizing the working class over military endeavors should be the government’s focus. By redirecting resources towards essential services and industries, rather than weapons, real progress can be achieved for the benefit of all citizens.

The situation in Gaza highlights the need for a more principled approach to international affairs. The imprisonment of individuals protesting against injustice underscores the importance of standing up for human rights, even in the face of government opposition.

As a representative of UNISON members, my commitment is to advocate for the interests of the working class and address the challenges they face. By remaining connected to the realities of workers’ lives, I aim to lead by example and prioritize the needs of union members above all else.

In the midst of global tensions, it is crucial for political leaders to uphold international law and condemn unlawful actions that threaten peace and stability. By distancing from reckless behavior and promoting diplomatic solutions, governments can foster a safer and more secure world for all.
