As the Policing Minister, I made a commitment to combat knife crime and enhance street safety, and after a year in office, that commitment is proving successful.
The efforts of the Home Office and law enforcement have led to a decrease in knife-related incidents, saving lives and creating safer communities. Tangible outcomes have surpassed mere rhetoric over the past year, with targeted enforcement and prevention initiatives significantly reducing robberies involving knives in high-risk areas.
A specialized task force dedicated to addressing knife robberies in seven high-incident regions has successfully reduced such crimes by 15% since June 2024, translating to nearly 2,500 fewer incidents. Strategic policing strategies, informed by data analysis, have effectively safeguarded communities and preempted acts of violence.
The impact of the County Lines Programme has also been remarkable, with a notable dismantling of exploitative drug networks that contribute to knife-related offenses and victimize vulnerable youths. Since July 2024, the closure of over 3,000 illicit lines, along with more than 8,200 arrests – including charging 1,600 line operators – and the seizure of around 1,000 knives, has led to positive outcomes. This effort has not only disrupted criminal activities but also supported over 4,300 at-risk individuals through safeguarding services.
Efforts to combat drug-related violence have yielded substantial results, with a 25% reduction in hospital admissions for stabbings in areas where Class A drug trafficking is prevalent, benefiting 840 individuals. Moreover, hospitalizations due to drug misuse have seen a significant decline, indicating tangible improvements in community well-being.
Innovative initiatives such as knife surrender schemes have facilitated the removal of nearly 60,000 knives from circulation, while advanced mapping technologies have enabled precise identification of knife crime hotspots for targeted interventions. Collaboration with Violence Reduction Units and the implementation of Young Futures Panel projects are proactively engaging with families and schools to deter youth involvement in criminal activities.
Legislative measures, including Ronan’s Law, which increases penalties for offenders and enhances victim protections, underscore the government’s commitment to combatting knife crime. Additionally, stricter age verification checks for online knife sales and proposed licensing schemes are being considered to deter illicit knife transactions.
While the battle against knife crime continues, the progress made over the past year demonstrates the efficacy of collaborative efforts between government, law enforcement, and communities. Each surrendered knife, closed County Line, and safeguarded child signifies a step towards saving lives and securing better futures.
The decline in knife crime incidents illustrates the positive impact of collective action, and the commitment remains unwavering to eradicate serious violence from our communities and provide every young person with the opportunity for a safer tomorrow.
