“Knife Crime Drops 15% in High-Impact Areas”

Knife-point robberies in areas heavily impacted by the issue have seen a significant decrease of 15% compared to the same period last year, according to recent data. The Home Office has reported the closure of over 3,000 county lines networks, resulting in an estimated 2,500 fewer individuals being at risk of robbery by assailants armed with knives.

Furthermore, the efforts to combat drug smuggling operations, often involving the exploitation of minors, have led to more than 8,000 arrests. The data reveals that over 4,000 young people and vulnerable individuals have been provided with support to steer them away from criminal gangs.

Policing Minister Sarah Jones commended the progress made in addressing knife crime, emphasizing that it was a result of deliberate strategies and interventions. The Government’s County Lines Programme has been instrumental in closing 3,042 county lines and making 8,226 arrests since July 2024. Additionally, the seizure of 923 knives and 4,323 safeguarding referrals have been notable achievements.

The Labour party, committed to reducing knife crime by half within a decade, has been met with approval from individuals like Pooja Kanda, who lost her son to a violent attack. Kanda expressed gratitude for the government’s efforts, highlighting the collaborative work between stakeholders to enhance protection for communities and prevent youth violence.

Kate Wareham, strategic director of the anti-knife crime organization Catch22, praised the Home Office for its progress in addressing county lines issues and safeguarding vulnerable individuals. The impact of the County Lines Programme in disrupting criminal activities and ensuring community safety has been acknowledged.

In response to the escalating knife crime, the Government launched the Knife-Enabled Robbery (KER) Taskforce in seven severely affected areas, including London, Greater Manchester, the West Midlands, West Yorkshire, and British Transport Police. These regions witnessed a 15% reduction in knife-enabled robberies, with reported offenses decreasing from 16,067 to 13,633 incidents.
