“Health Secretary Announces Expansion of Soft Drinks Levy”

Growing up in the East End under challenging circumstances is a personal experience I deeply understand.

Living in a single-parent household with basic living conditions, including bare floors and unreliable electricity, presented its struggles. Despite the hardships, our saving grace was our council flat, supportive teachers, and nearby family members.

This support system enabled me to defy the odds and progress to a position at the Cabinet table, where I now have the privilege of assisting others in similar circumstances. Currently, the challenges faced by children are severe, with obesity rates in four and five-year-olds reaching unprecedented levels.

A concerning trend is that primary-aged children most frequently require hospitalization for tooth extractions due to decay. Children from economically disadvantaged backgrounds are disproportionately affected by poor health conditions, living in damp residences, consuming low-quality food, residing in temporary housing, struggling to adapt in school, and experiencing hunger before bedtime.

The kind of foundation we are providing these children with is critical to shaping their future. Allowing these circumstances to persist will result in a bleak outlook for their overall well-being and longevity.

With the aim of furthering our efforts in safeguarding children’s health, I am pleased to announce the expansion of the soft drinks industry levy to include sugary milkshakes, flavored milks, and milk substitutes.

This initiative is centered on aiding children in shedding excess weight, rather than solely generating revenue.

The original levy has proven effective, with a notable decrease in sugar consumption from soft drinks and a reduction in tooth extraction cases among children. It stands as one of the Conservatives’ notable accomplishments.

It is regrettable that the focus seems to be more on apologizing for their public health track record than acknowledging Liz Truss’ mini-Budget.

Labour remains steadfast in its commitment to enhancing children’s health. This latest measure is projected to eliminate approximately four million calories from children’s daily diets and reduce obesity cases by 14,000 annually.

This is just one facet of our comprehensive approach to combatting obesity and child poverty. Labour is actively supporting children through breakfast clubs, expanding access to free school meals, prohibiting advertisements for unhealthy foods, cracking down on youth vaping, and improving air quality for our youth.

Every child’s well-being should not be contingent on their family’s financial status. Labour is reshaping the odds to ensure every child receives a strong start in life.
