A man has been given a 30-year prison sentence for the murder of his daughter, Ryan al Najjar, who was found bound and gagged in a pond after turning 18. The father, Khaled al Najjar, claimed Ryan was becoming too westernized, leading to her tragic death. Ryan’s parents had sought asylum in the Netherlands from war-torn Syria, but the father disagreed with Ryan’s adapted lifestyle, resulting in her brutal killing.
Evidence revealed that Ryan was still alive when thrown into the water, with traces of her father’s DNA found on the duct tape used to wrap her body. During the trial, it was established that Ryan’s brothers, Muhanad and Muhamad, were also involved in her murder as data from their phones and algae on their shoes linked them to the crime scene.
Khaled al Najjar fled to Syria after the murder and received a 30-year sentence in absentia, while Ryan’s brothers were sentenced to 20 years for their roles in the crime. The family appeared integrated in society, but Ryan’s behavior and clothing choices were sources of conflict, with her mother alleging that her husband was abusive and controlling.
Ryan’s rebellious behavior, including not wearing scarves and socializing with boys, further incited her father’s anger. Family members described Khaled as violent and unjust, creating an atmosphere of fear and tension in the household. Despite efforts to fit in, Ryan faced bullying at school, leading to a tragic end at the hands of her father.
