“Determined Student with SMA Makes History Conquering Snowdon”

Maxwell McKnight, a determined young man, is on track to graduate with top honors in business management. Despite being diagnosed with spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) at the age of two, the same condition as the twins of former Little Mix member Jesy Nelson, Maxwell made history in 2024 by becoming the first wheelchair user to conquer Snowdon, raising £50,000 for charity SMA UK in the process.

Reflecting on his achievement, Maxwell described the climb as one of the most challenging yet rewarding experiences of his life. In a heartfelt video message to Jesy, Maxwell shared words of encouragement, emphasizing that while life as a wheelchair user presents obstacles, it can still be fulfilling with the right mindset.

Born with SMA, Maxwell’s journey has been marked by milestones and challenges. Supported by his parents, Joanne and Paul, who were initially told he might not live past childhood, Maxwell has defied expectations and is a vocal advocate for SMA awareness and early screening. He believes that adding SMA screening to the NHS newborn heel prick test could save countless lives and reduce the financial burden of living with SMA, which can be exorbitant.

Maxwell, who has been dating his girlfriend Daisy Hall for six years, faces daily physical challenges due to SMA affecting his hips, lungs, and throat. Despite these obstacles, he maintains a positive outlook and continues to pursue his ambitions, including his advocacy work with SMA UK and his aspirations for the future.

Acknowledging the unwavering support of his family, especially his mother and sister, Maxwell expressed gratitude for their sacrifices and dedication. As a trustee of Caudwell Children, a charity supporting disabled children, Maxwell remains focused on his goals, aiming for achievements in accessible sports, social media influence, academic success, and a future as a business leader.
