“British Superfan Attends 1,400 Middlesbrough FC Matches”

Nick Waites, a devoted football fan in Britain, has attended every competitive game of Middlesbrough FC for nearly three decades, totaling 1,400 consecutive matches since September 1996. His unwavering support includes all league, FA Cup, league cup, and European fixtures. Among these, his most cherished memory is witnessing Middlesbrough’s historic 2-1 triumph over Bolton Wanderers in the Carling Cup final in Cardiff in 2004.

Nick’s passion for the club was ignited by his late father, Stuart, a fervent Boro supporter, with his mother, Rita, also sharing a love for match days. Over the years, Nick has witnessed legendary players like Bryan Robson and Gazza, but it was the Brazilian star Juninho who captured his heart during his three stints at the club from 1995 to 2004.

Despite challenges, including a hernia operation and a car accident, Nick’s dedication remains unwavering. As a chartered accountant, he has even worked on tax returns for top footballers and enjoyed hospitality at games. Reflecting on his remarkable streak, Nick mused about the possibility of reaching 1,500 games, acknowledging the changing landscape of football with its increased number of matches.

His streak was momentarily halted in 1992 when he missed a game due to his brother’s wedding, and more recently during the pandemic restrictions. However, Nick celebrated his latest milestone at Middlesbrough’s FA Cup defeat to Fulham. With his holidays strategically planned around breaks and a firm commitment to avoid missing games, Nick considers his attendance an addiction and shows no signs of slowing down.
