A recently declassified photograph has emerged, revealing a British submarine confronting the Russian spy vessel Yantar. The incident follows Defense Secretary John Healey’s disclosure in November that the Yantar had targeted RAF pilots with lasers while operating near UK waters. He condemned Russia’s actions as highly risky, emphasizing that the Yantar is primarily used for intelligence gathering and mapping undersea cables.
In a separate occurrence, an image released by the Ministry of Defence (MoD) shows a Royal Navy submarine and helicopter facing off against the Russian ship. During the November 2024 incident, RAF maritime patrol aircraft, along with HMS Cattistock, HMS Tyne, and RFA Proteus, were deployed to monitor the Yantar’s movements closely.
Mr. Healey informed Members of Parliament in January that he had authorized a Royal Navy submarine to surface near the Yantar as a deterrent measure, demonstrating that the vessel was under constant surveillance. Subsequently, the Yantar departed UK waters and proceeded to the Mediterranean.
A representative from the Ministry of Defence affirmed that the UK’s stance towards President Putin is unwavering, emphasizing their vigilance and readiness to take decisive actions to safeguard the country. The spokesperson highlighted the ongoing threat posed by Russia, including attempts to map undersea infrastructure, and outlined measures such as imposing sanctions, monitoring Russian vessels, and advancing anti-submarine technology.
Through initiatives like the Atlantic Bastion program, the UK is spearheading the development of hybrid navies, integrating cutting-edge technologies to protect critical undersea assets from emerging threats.
During a press conference in November, Mr. Healey characterized the Yantar as a symbol of the increasing Russian threat, reiterating the UK’s preparedness to counter such provocations. The Defense Secretary emphasized past successful interventions and the government’s commitment to closely monitoring and responding to such activities. The Russian embassy in London criticized the UK government’s actions, labeling them as “Russophobic” and fueling militaristic tensions.
