British Expat in Canada Dies After Altercation

A British citizen living in Canada was tragically killed following a violent altercation with another individual during the early hours of the morning, as reported by authorities. Luke Kellett-Smith, 34, was out on December 28 when a man identified as Benard Emeka Oneh engaged in a verbal dispute with him around 1:20 am. Kellett-Smith, originally from Woking and residing in Toronto since 2019, was struck twice, leading to him collapsing outside a venue in the city. Subsequently, he lost consciousness after the second blow and succumbed to his injuries on New Year’s Eve.

The alleged assailant, Emeka Oneh, 30, was apprehended on the same day for the attack and was initially charged with aggravated assault. However, this charge was later upgraded to manslaughter by the Toronto Police Service. The incident took place at Front Street West and University Avenue, where Oneh reportedly fled the scene but was swiftly apprehended on the same day.

Emeka Oneh was scheduled to appear at the Toronto Regional Bail Centre on the following Monday. Details regarding the relationship between the two men or the circumstances leading up to the altercation remain undisclosed.

Friends and family of Luke Kellett-Smith mourned his loss, describing him as someone who had crafted a life filled with adventure, companionship, and opportunities. His best friend, Jack Elton, praised Luke for his zest for life, his ability to forge lasting connections, and his gentle nature despite his imposing stature.

Luke, the eldest of three siblings, had sadly lost one of his brothers previously. His remaining brother, Matt, who is associated with Horndean FC, also expressed condolences to Luke’s loved ones. The football club extended their sympathies to Luke’s family and friends during this difficult time.

A GoFundMe page has been set up by Luke’s supporters to raise funds for repatriating his remains to the UK, with donations exceeding £27,000. The fundraising appeal aims to support Luke’s parents as they cope with the heartbreaking loss of their sons and facilitate bringing him back to his hometown of Woking for a final resting place alongside his departed brother James.
