Nigeria’s Federal Road Safety Corps has released new photos from the site of a tragic accident involving British heavyweight boxer Anthony Joshua. The organization has also offered a detailed account of the incident that claimed the lives of two other individuals.
Anthony Joshua was hospitalized after being extricated from the wreckage of the SUV he was traveling in on Nigeria’s Lagos-Ibadan expressway. The crash occurred when a blown tire caused the vehicle to veer off course and collide with a stationary lorry.
Authorities from the Ogun State police have initiated an investigation, while the FRSC has also provided an update on the matter.
The FRSC shared four previously unseen images of the damaged SUV and the truck it collided with at 2:10 pm GMT on December 29. The photos depict officials at the scene along with witnesses, and the rear of the truck has been cordoned off.
In a series of posts, the FRSC stated, “FRSC OPERATIVES RESCUE ANTHONY JOSHUA AS TWO DIE FROM OGUN STATE FATAL CRASH.” The statement confirmed the fatal incident involving Anthony Joshua’s vehicle and a stationary truck on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway. The crash, which occurred around noon, resulted in the loss of two lives and minor injuries to others, including Joshua.
According to preliminary findings, the accident was caused by overspeeding and reckless overtaking, highlighting the dangers of violating traffic regulations on Nigerian highways.
The FRSC extended condolences to the bereaved families and wished Anthony Joshua a speedy recovery. Motorists were reminded to adhere to road safety rules, especially on high-speed roads like the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway.
The statement emphasized the FRSC’s commitment to promoting road safety, rapid emergency response, and ongoing public education to reduce road accidents and fatalities nationwide.
Preliminary reports from Ogun’s state government indicate that the two deceased individuals were foreign nationals. Anthony Joshua has not made any public statements following the incident, and his current hospital location has not been disclosed by authorities.
