Thick black smoke has been spotted billowing from a major hospital this afternoon as fire crews rush to the scene.

Images shared across social media show black smoke rising into the sky above Bristol, with many residents saying it appears to be coming from St Michael’s Hospital – a maternity hospital in the city centre. Firefighters from Avon and Fire and Rescue Service are currently battling the flames, while pregnant mothers and babies are being evacuated onto the street, the BBC reports.

In a statement posted to X, Avon Fire & Rescue Service said: “We’re currently responding to a fire on Southwell Street, Bristol. We encourage people to avoid the area while we deal with the incident. Further updates will be issued.”

Horrifying images taken at the scene of the fire this evening show a huge plume of black smoke filling the sky in Bristol.

St Michael’s Hospital is a large maternity hospital in Bristol’s city centre.

Pregnant mothers and babies are currently being evacuated from the building onto the street outside, the BBC reports.

Witness Fin Porter captured the moment smoke began pouring into the sky as fire crews attempted to put the out the blaze.

Avon Fire and Rescue Services have urged people to avoid the area.

The fire appears to have broken out at St Michael’s Hospital on Southwell Street, Bristol.
