Renowned ABC personality, Jim Vargas, has passed away at the age of 78. The esteemed journalist, recognized for his coverage of political events and public matters, enjoyed a successful four-decade tenure in the field of journalism, dedicating 20 years to ABC7.

Hailing from California, Vargas breathed his last on January 14, with the cause of his demise yet undisclosed.

During his illustrious career, the beloved reporter clinched an Emmy award in 1974 with Steve David and Bob Marshall for their reporting on the abduction of American actress Patty Hearst. Additionally, he earned a prestigious Peabody Award for his team’s coverage of the 1989 Lorna Prieta earthquake in California. Apart from his contributions at ABC, Vargas also made significant impacts at KRON and KTVU.

Family members revealed that Vargas ventured into broadcasting after covering the political movements and unrest of the late 1960s and early 1970s in the United States.
