Anthony Joshua has been hospitalized following a car accident in Nigeria that claimed two lives. The former heavyweight champion was involved in a collision between a Jeep and a stationary truck on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway. Eddie Hearn, Joshua’s promoter, confirmed that Joshua sustained minor injuries but was on his way to the hospital for treatment.
Reports indicate that Joshua was seated in the back of a vehicle involved in a two-car convoy when the accident occurred. Eyewitnesses described the convoy consisting of a Lexus SUV and a Pajero SUV, with Joshua accompanied by security personnel in another vehicle behind them. Tragically, two occupants of the Lexus, including the person next to Joshua, lost their lives in the crash.
The incident was attributed to a tire burst causing Joshua’s vehicle to swerve into the truck, leading to the loss of control. Local authorities are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the accident. Despite the crash, Joshua was reported to be in good condition, with images showing him standing and local police confirming his well-being after sustaining minor injuries.
Joshua, who was in Nigeria before the accident, had recently won an exhibition fight against Jake Paul in Miami, Florida. Following the victory, Joshua hinted at big plans for 2026 and reignited his rivalry with Tyson Fury. The two heavyweight fighters have a history of verbal sparring but have yet to face each other in the ring.
Plans for a potential Joshua-Fury bout have surfaced, with discussions suggesting it could take place under the auspices of Riyadh Season and His Excellency Turki Alalshikh. Joshua, eager for future challenges, called out Fury after his recent win, expressing his readiness to face him in the ring. The boxing world eagerly awaits the possibility of the long-awaited showdown between the two heavyweight contenders.
