“Aldi Named Most Affordable Supermarket for Fifth Year”

Aldi has been recognized as the most affordable supermarket in 2025 by consumer advocacy group Which?. Which? monitors grocery prices daily and discloses the most budget-friendly stores monthly. Throughout 2025, Aldi held the title of the cheapest supermarket for ten out of 12 months, maintaining its position as the UK’s most economical supermarket for the fifth consecutive year.

In December, Aldi topped the list for 68 items, with an average monthly cost of £123.60. Lidl followed closely in second place, with an average cost of £123.70 for both Lidl Plus members and non-members, just 10p more than Aldi. Lidl managed to secure the title of the cheapest supermarket twice in 2025, in July and October, with only a 77p average monthly price gap compared to Aldi.

For the same 68 items, Asda customers faced an average bill of £134.89 in December, while Tesco Clubcard holders paid £135.84 and non-members paid £139.12. Sainsbury’s Nectar cardholders spent £141.45, or £143.74 without the card, while Waitrose emerged as the priciest option, costing £170.46 in December.

Which? research indicated that Waitrose was, on average, 35% more expensive compared to Aldi throughout 2025. The comparison also extended to a larger weekly shopping list of 180 items, where Asda was the most cost-effective in December, with an average bill of £450.82.

Tesco Clubcard holders spent an average of £462 in December for the same 180 items, while non-Clubcard Tesco shoppers paid £493.53. Morrisons customers accrued a bill of £466.04 with a loyalty discount or £467.46 without. Sainsbury’s Nectar holders paid £468.61, while non-members paid £501.89. Waitrose continued its trend as the priciest option for the larger shopping list, with an average bill of £529.17.

The analysis conducted by Which? factored in special offers and loyalty prices where applicable but excluded multi-buy deals. Reena Sewraz, Which? Retail Editor, emphasized Aldi’s consistent affordability, highlighting its dominance in offering the lowest prices overall. She also commended Asda for its competitive pricing of branded goods, urging shoppers to compare options to potentially save hundreds of pounds annually.
