German authorities are looking into an explosive-laden drone with a detonator discovered at Leipzig airport. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has indicated Moscow’s plan to escalate retaliation against countries supporting Ukraine. Lavrov stated in an interview with VGTRK, Russia’s state media, that they would use harsher methods to dismantle support for Kyiv’s war efforts, a move already in progress.
Reportedly, an airport staff member found the drone with an unidentified explosive device in the cargo operations zone near the south runway of Leipzig airport, a facility designated as “critical infrastructure.” Leipzig serves as a key NATO airport for transporting military supplies like armaments, ammunition, and weaponry to Ukraine via Ukrainian cargo carriers.
The presence of the drone near a Ukrainian cargo plane has raised concerns in Germany, with the country’s interior minister, Alexander Dobrindt, describing it as a significant security risk. Dobrindt highlighted the incident’s sophisticated nature, suggesting a professional hybrid threat scenario rather than amateur involvement.
Investigations are ongoing, and German authorities have yet to determine the drone’s origin. However, U.S. intelligence reports cited by the Wall Street Journal link the drone to the Russian government. Berlin is responding cautiously, enhancing anti-drone capabilities while refraining from premature attributions.
Dobrindt emphasized the evolving threats faced by Germany, citing Russia’s utilization of drones, espionage, sabotage, and influence campaigns, especially in light of upcoming regional elections. Germany has been a target of daily hybrid warfare, including cyber attacks and covert actions, aimed at destabilizing the country and effecting political and social changes.
The Institute for Strategic Dialogue (ISD) has been monitoring Russia’s online interference in Germany through Operation Overload, focusing on generating discord within NATO member countries and Ukraine. Dobrindt acknowledged disinformation attempts targeting German politics and society, particularly during regional elections.
Hans-Jakob Schindler, senior director of the Counter Extremism Project, highlighted Russia’s aggressive tactics, expressing concerns about the boundary between defense and direct conflict. Lavrov’s recent remarks signify a departure from Russia’s previous denial of interference in Western nations, indicating a more aggressive stance against Europe, the West, and NATO.
The drone incident at Leipzig underscores the escalating hybrid warfare tactics employed by Russia, posing significant challenges for Germany’s security and diplomatic relations.
